J. Scott Brown

J. Scott Brown has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of sociology and gerontology. He also is a fellow in Miami’s Scripps Gerontology Center. Brown joined Miami’s faculty in 2005. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology and history from Furman University in 1992, a master’s degree in applied sociology from Clemson University in 1996, a master’s in sociology in 1999 from Duke University and a doctorate in sociology in 2002, also from Duke. He was a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellow at the Carolina Population Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2002-2005.

Brown’s research interests include life course and aging, with emphases on demographic assessment of mortality and morbidity and welfare state effects on wealth and health inequalities. He has published widely, in journals including Social Forces, Developmental Psychology, Social Science Research and Child Development. He is on the editorial board of Demography and The Journals of Gerontology: Social Sciences.

Brown also has published book chapters in publications including the International Handbook of the Demography of Aging (forthcoming) and on “Race, Ethnicity and Aging” in the Encyclopedia of Health and Aging (2007). He also has contributed to several reports of Miami’s Scripps Gerontology Center and presented papers at conferences and workshops nationally and internationally.
