Xiao-Wen Cheng

Xiao-Wen Cheng has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of microbiology. Cheng graduated from Hunan Agricultural University, China, with a bachelor’s degree in plant protection. In 1983, he joined the Hunan Plant Protection Institute as a research assistant. He then pursued his virology studies at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and received a master’s in entomology from the University of the Philippines.

Cheng continued his graduate studies on viruses that kill insect pests at Clemson University and received his doctorate in entomology in 1998. His further training in virology was through a post-doctoral fellowship at the Great Lakes Forestry Center, Canada. Cheng joined the Miami faculty in 2003.

Students in his research lab study host range factors of insect baculoviruses and ascoviruses. His research has been supported by Ohio State University and the USDA. He also has published nine articles and two book chapters with undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows as co-authors since he came to Miami.
