Fazeel Khan

Fazeel Khan has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of mechanical and manufacturing engineering. He came to Miami in 2003 following a post-doctoral appointment at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), N.Y. He received his master’s degree in 1998 and a doctorate in 2002, both from RPI. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics, with a minor in economics, from Middlebury College.

Khan’s research activities involve the utilization of mathematical models to simulate the deformation behavior of polymeric and metallic materials and the development of reconfigurable structures using shape memory polymers. The former enables designers and product engineers to test and refine material selection and design before advancing a product to the often high-cost prototype phase. The second line of research represents a collaborative effort with the military to develop morphing aeronautical structures.

In addition to having taught several courses at the sophomore and junior level, with an academic interest in the field of materials and a personal interest in automotive engineering, Khan has been an academic advisor to the Baja Team which campaigns an off-road vehicle, entirely designed and fabricated in-house, at an international venue every year. This will be the fifth year for this project, which has continued to grow in participation and competitiveness.
