Lisa J.M. Poirier

Lisa J.M. Poirier has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of comparative religion. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College, master’s of divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York and a doctorate from Syracuse University. Her book, New Religions in New France: Religious Creativity and Gender in Colonial Contexts, is forthcoming from Syracuse University Press. Poirier’s article, “Godmothers and Goddaughters: Catholic Women in Colonial New France and New England,” was included in The Encyclopedia of Women and Religion in North America, selected by the American Historical Association as winner of the 2006 Waldo G. Leland Prize for best reference tool in the field of history.

Poirier serves as the editor of “Contexts and Consequences: New Studies in Religion and History,” a series of monographs published by The Davies Group. She has served as director of graduate studies in the department of comparative religion since 2003. She is an active member of the American Academy of Religion.

Poirier’s research interests are reflected in her teaching, which focuses on issues of colonialism and gender in the Americas, Native American religions, African American religions and on method and theory in the study of religion.
