March, program and day of service part of Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration at Miami

01/13/2009

A Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration for the Oxford and Miami University communities begins with a march at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, in the uptown parks. Religious leaders and students from Miami and the Talawanda schools will read part of King's "Speech from Birmingham Jail."

Following the march, at about 11 a.m. in Hall Auditorium, community members will share their reflections on King. Also featured will be the Miami Collegiate Chorale and Tammy Kernodle, associate professor of music.

Throughout the day, members of the community are invited to participate in a day of service. For more information on projects and serving, contact Laura Smith in the office of community engagement and service, 529-2961.

Volunteer opportunities for this national day of community service can be found also at www.mlkday.gov.

Events are presented by the Miami chapter of Alpha Pi Alpha, black history celebration committee, office of diversity affairs and division of student affairs.

For more information, contact Janine Todd, 529-6504.
