Miami received quotes with very favorable pricing for bulk purchase of Windows and Macintosh computers after IT services requested bids at the end of last semester. Leveraging the state capital funding set aside by the provost for computers in the academic areas, the university has a one-time opportunity to purchase computers at significant savings.
This bulk purchase will allow the office of the provost to purchase 62 more computers for academic units that will help address the problem of lifecycle replacement of computers on campus. This special pricing is available to all university offices and departments, but orders must be placed no later than Feb. 15.
Both desktop and laptop models from Dell and Apple are included in this opportunity. IT services chose specific models to include in the RFP based on faculty requests to the Provost's office. "These models meet over 90 percent of the stated needs of faculty and staff," said Robert Howard, senior director of support services and campus partnerships. "We hope to expand this program and provide bulk purchase opportunities to maximize savings to university budgets and to address the significant problem of regular lifecycle replacement."
Letters, with descriptions of the models included and directions for ordering, were sent to all vice presidents, deans, directors and department chairs on Jan. 22.
