‘The Andean Band Phenomenon’ UniDiversity lecture today

Ethnomusicologist Thomas George Caracas Garcia (music) will present “El Cóndor Pasa: The Andean Band Phenomenon” at 5 p.m. today in 212 MacMillan Hall. The lecture is part of the Center for American and World Cultures’ UniDiversity program.

Garcia, a guitarist and lutenist, is an active solo and chamber music performer specializing in Brazilian music.

He is a former editor of the Lute Society Quarterly and is the North America contributor to Roda de Choro magazine. He is co-author of Choro: A Social History of a Brazilian Popular Music, which explores the history of the Brazilian music style popular in the 1920s and 1930s.

In his lecture Garcia will discuss how in recent years Andean bands, which traditionally played music for local consumption, have expanded into the international market, reflecting the tendency toward globalization of popular and ethnic music. Garcia will examine what prompted this move from a regional to a global audience and look at the social and economic impacts of this trend.
