Gary (Pete) Peterson (chair, family studies and social work) has been named a National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Fellow in recognition of his outstanding scholarly achievements and leadership on family issues.
Peterson is one of only nine individuals named a Fellow in 2006. He has served on NCFR's board of directors and as a section chair. NCFR is the primary national professional organization for university academics and professionals who study or provide service to families.
"Professor Peterson is a leading family science scholar whose contributions have shaped our understanding of parent-adolescent development and family theory," said Pamela Monroe, NCFR president.
Peterson's research explores how parents contribute to adolescent social competence and family influences on adolescent autonomy. He currently is examining parent-adolescent relations across many cultures, including Russia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Chile and the United States. One particular area of study involves an emerging adulthood issue, the fact that it's taking longer for young people to move into traditional adult responsibilities like marriage and/or forming one's own household. His past research has looked at family influences on the life plans of low-income, rural Appalachian youth.
"All of us who work with Pete know him as an unassuming colleague who seldom talks about any of his achievements, much less his national stature in his profession. This is well-deserved recognition for an individual who is outstanding not only as a scholar, but as a teacher and an administrator," said Carine Feyten, dean of Miami's School of Education and Allied Profession."
Peterson's scholarly record also includes serving as co-editor of The Handbook of Marriage and Family (2nd edition, 1999) and Adolescents in Families (1986). He contributes articles to referred journals and served as editor of the journal, Marriage and Family Review. In addition, he served as general editor of a new handbook series, The Haworth Series on Marriage and Family Studies. The series addresses cutting-edge topics with invited scholars from around the world who reviewed current research and theory.
