  Three Miami faculty have been awarded grants from the Philip and Elaina Hampton Fund for Faculty International Initiatives fall 2009 competition: William Albin, professor of music; Lisa McLaughlin, associate professor of communication and of women's studies; Huatong Sun, assistant professor of English.

  A letter from Gail Walenga, assistant vice president for student health and wellness, updates the community on vaccines and preventative measures against the H1N1 flu. Two student-produced videos support her message.

  Miami University welcomes students from Talawanda schools today (Nov. 20) and Saturday (Nov. 21) as programs under the Farmer School of Business outreach initiative, ComMUnity, culminate with a flurry of all-day seminars and project presentations.   
11/19/2009  Miami to present lecture on health care reform  
  Christopher Jennings (Miami '83), former health policy adviser to President Bill Clinton, will speak on "Health Care Reform, Then and Now: Politics, Process and Prospects" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Marcum Conference Center. He is presenting the annual W. Fred Cottrell Distinguished Alumni Lecture of Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

  Miami University's women's studies program will host a symposium to continue the bicentennial celebration. The event, "Theory into Action Across Generations," will be held Nov 20 - 21 in 212 MacMillan Hall.   
11/18/2009  Kennedy presented inspirational professional service award  
  Joe Kennedy, Miami University professor emeritus in the department of mathematics, has received the Christofferson-Fawcett Award. The Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (Ohio CTM) presented Kennedy this award at its annual meeting on Friday, Nov. 13, in Cincinnati.   
11/18/2009  Jazz Ensemble to perform Nov. 23  
  The Miami University Jazz Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in Hall Auditorium. The ensemble, conducted by Jeremy Long, assistant professor of saxophone and jazz, will perform a free concert featuring a tribute to the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records, with music from Blue Note artists Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver and others.   
11/17/2009  Scripps' Lokon receives environmental arts research grant  
  Elizabeth Lokon, a research associate at the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University, is the first recipient of the Environmental Arts Research Grant from The Society for Arts in Healthcare (SAH) and American Art Resources (AAR).   
11/17/2009  Miami professor honored for outreach program  
  Gwen Etter-Lewis, professor of English, black world studies and women's studies at Miami University, recently received the Uplifting Model Award from Miami's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for her work in developing a mentoring program that prepares low-income high school girls for college.

  The Miami University marching band will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in Millett Hall. Stephen Lytle, conductor, will lead the band in performing highlights of the marching band's performances during the football season. The concert is free and open to the public.

  Miami University's office of new student programs has received first place for its first-year e-newsletter series in the Outstanding Multimedia/Emerging Technologies category presented by the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA).   
11/16/2009  Geology department hosts open house Nov. 20  
  Miami University's department of geology will host an open house to celebrate the university's bicentennial and the history of the department. This event will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20, in the Limper Geology Museum in Shideler Hall.

  Miami University's student health service (SHS) has scheduled more H1N1 flu vaccine clinics for students with Flu Mist, a nasal spray.

  Every quarter, university communications provides updates on sustainability and resource-saving efforts at Miami. Perhaps the most exciting news in these areas this fall is that Miami now has a sustainability committee and sustainability coordinator.

  Miami University's department of music will present two one-act operas, "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 19-21, in Hall Auditorium.

  "Hedda Gabler," by Henrik Ibsen, will be presented by the Miami University department of theatre at 8 p.m. Nov. 19-21 and Dec. 3-5, and at 2 p.m. Dec. 6, in Gates-Abegglen Theatre in the Center for Performing Arts.   
11/12/2009  Faculty member Julie Park selected as Emerging Scholar 1 photo(s)  
  Julie Park, assistant professor of educational leadership at Miami University, has been selected as a 2010 Emerging Scholar by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Park is one five new scholars recognized from across the nation who are emerging as contributing scholars in student affairs and higher education.   
11/12/2009  In memoriam: Dwight Cleveland Black  
  Dwight Cleveland "Cleve" Black, 74, of College Corner, died Monday, Nov. 9. He worked at Miami University for 32 years as a custodian in the physical facilities department.   
11/12/2009  Crime Alert: Havighurst Hall burglaries  
  Two students reported that laptops were allegedly stolen from their rooms in Havighurst Hall Wednesday, Nov. 11.
