11/06/2009  Miami student hopes to create first implantable mobile robot 1 photo(s) 
  Miami University junior Justinn Eddie has his little sister to thank for inspiring what has become his life's work. Eddie, a mechanical engineering major from Cleveland, is working on an invention of a nano-sized robot that would be implanted under the skin or inside a vein and would travel on its own from one place to another to deliver nutrients or medicine within the human body.

  Elinora Bo Hyun Park, a Korean-American businesswoman, has made a gift of $500,000 to Miami University's Farmer School of Business in support of scholarships for international study.   
11/04/2009  Shriver to be inducted into Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame 1 photo(s) 
  Phillip Shriver, president emeritus of Miami University, will join 19 others being inducted into the 2009 class of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the Franklin County Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus. Shriver is a Navy veteran of World War II, having served from July 1943 until January 1946.

  Miami University Distinguished Professor of Geology, Yildirim Dilek, has received the 2009 Geological Society of America's (GSA) International Division Distinguished Career Award. The award was presented at the GSA's annual meeting, held in Portland, Oregon, Oct. 17-21.   
11/02/2009  Miami to create blueprint for health promotion at colleges  
  Miami University will be part of a national demonstration project to educate students on a variety of health issues such as smoking, diabetes, stress, sexually-related topics, alcohol and drugs and intellectual health. Depending on the outcome of the project, it could be the blueprint for health promotion at colleges across the country.   
10/30/2009  "Giants of 1809: Darwin, Lincoln and Poe" Nov. 11-12  
  As part of Miami University's Bicentennial celebration, "Giants of 1809: The Legacy of Charles Darwin, Abraham Lincoln and Edgar Allen Poe" will be held Nov. 11-12. The interdisciplinary symposium will examine the impact of these three pivotal figures of the early 19th century, all of whom were born in 1809 - the year of Miami's founding.

  Individuals received Women's Leadership and Male Ally Awards honoring their efforts as advocates for women, champions of equality and models of leadership during the Women's Leadership Symposium and Celebration hosted Oct. 23 by Miami University's women's center.

  Miami University alumnus Rajiv Joseph has received a $50,000 Whiting Writers' Award for 2009, which recognizes extraordinary talent and promise and is one of the most coveted prizes for up-and-coming writers.

  Helaine Alessio, chair and professor of kinesiology and health, received the Founder's Award for extensive service and contributions to the Midwest American College of Sports Medicine. She was honored at the organization's annual meeting held Oct. 16-17. Also honored was Hayden Ansinelli, a junior exercise science major, who received an award for the best undergraduate research poster.

  Jenise Bauman, a graduate student in botany at Miami University, won the E. Lucy Braun Award for Excellence in Ecology for her poster presentation at the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America in August.

  Historian and writer David G. McCullough, who has profiled three American presidents and chronicled seminal events and achievements in American history, will give the Jack R. Anderson Distinguished Lecture at Miami's Farmer School of Business on Monday, Nov. 9. His talk is titled "Leadership and the History You Don't Know."

  As part of Miami University's Bicentennial Homecoming celebration, the university's Alumni Association honored 30 of its faculty and staff at the Effective Educator Reception Oct. 21 for making a profound and lasting difference in students' lives.

  Louie Hinnen of West Bloomfield, Mich., is winner of the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award for the 2009 Young Sculptors Competition. Hinnen's piece, "Ring," will become part of Miami University's Best Young Sculptors of the 21st Century Collection.

  A number of activities and events make this Bicentennial homecoming celebration (Oct. 19-24) one for the history books. Miami University's Campus Activities Council(CAC) has planned a variety of activities to celebrate Homecoming 2009: "Live the Legacy." In addition, other organizations have joined the celebration. More than 900 musicians and performers will take the stage Friday, Oct. 23, for the 8 p.m. Performing Arts Series presentation of LegacyFest, a star-studded performance featuring Benny Golson.

  Miami University continues its Bicentennial celebration with Homecoming 2009: "Live the Legacy" Oct. 23-24. This year's Homecoming honors Miami's 200th anniversary with a parade, a picnic, football vs. Northern Illinois, and a performance extravaganza that features jazz legend Benny Golson and newly written musical scores.

  A combination of academic rigor and real-life challenge helps make the supply chain management curriculum at Miami's Farmer School of Business a valuable preparation for success in the field, according to a recent study. In the September 2009 issue of Supply Chain Management Review (SCMR), a ranking of academic programs places the Miami program at number 17 nationally.

  A candlelight vigil to remember the events of and lives lost during Freedom Summer 1964 will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the Freedom Summer Memorial on Miami University's Western campus, adjacent to Kumler Chapel on Western Drive.   
10/07/2009  Information and resources on H1N1 at Miami  
  Overall, Miami University's student health services (SHS) has seen decreasing numbers of students with flu or flu-like illness in the last two weeks. (There were 286 in the first three weeks and 45 in the last two weeks.) Officials believe the decline may be due to two possible reasons: 1-the initial spread of the disease has slowed because students are using good prevention, or 2-students are self-managing and recuperating well on their own or seeing their own physicians.   
10/07/2009  Miami geologists part of ARDI discovery to be featured on Discovery Channel Oct. 11  
  The discovery and study of a 4.4 million-year-old female partial skeleton nicknamed "Ardi," - announced in the journal Science last week - that included contributions by two Miami faculty, will be the subject of a Discovery Channel special, "Discovering Ardi: Changing Our Understanding of Human Origins," at 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. The program documents the sustained, intensive investigation leading up to this landmark publication of the Ardipithecus ramidus fossils.
