  Miami University's first-year class next fall looks to be larger, more diverse and even academically stronger than last year. This, according to the high number of students confirming their acceptance by the May 1 deadline.

  Miami University Hamilton has been awarded a $1 million Teaching American History (TAH) grant. It's the campus' fourth TAH grant, an unprecedented feat.   
05/07/2008  Engineering students install water pump they designed 1 photo(s) 
  The village of Guelekoro, in Mali, West Africa, will receive a much-needed water pump through the efforts of a group of senior engineering majors at Miami University. For their senior design project, the team designed and fabricated the water pump during the past school year. They will travel to Guelekoro just after graduation on May 10, to install the system and train villagers on how to maintain the pump.

  The Distinguished Service Award is given annually to members of the Miami University faculty or staff who have made a significant impact on the life and mission of the university. This year's recipients are Susan Mosley-Howard, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Judith Sessions, dean and university librarian.   
05/06/2008  Miami to award 3,245 degrees during spring commencement  
  Miami University will award 3,245 degrees at its 169th annual spring commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in Yager Stadium. President David Hodge will preside. Robin Roberts, anchor of ABC News' "Good Morning America," will be the featured speaker.

  Eric Cook, a junior psychology and philosophy major at Miami University, is one of 36 students across the country selected to participate in the Sidley Austin Pre-Law Scholars Initiative. Pre-Law Scholars receive up to $2,500 in financial support for LSAT registration fees, application fees to law school and other preparation fees. Scholars also receive a $2,500 scholarship during their senior year.

  Thirty-nine works by 19 Miami University art faculty and graduate students are part of "Connections," an exhibition at the Institute of Art and Design (IAD) at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic. The students, all teaching assistants, graduate in May with a master's in fine arts.   
04/30/2008  Miami third in nationwide recycling contest  
  Miami placed third of 400 schools competing in RecyleMania 2008, an intercollegiate recycling contest that has almost doubled each year since it began in 2001. Miami recycled 70.69 cumulative pounds per on-campus student in the Stephen K. Gaski Per Capita Classic Contest (partial campus division).

  Eleven Miami University voice students won awards at the Ohio chapter competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) held at Bowling Green State University April 12.   
04/25/2008  Trustees approve planning for new student center and new bachelor's degree on regional campuses  
  Miami University trustees today, April 25, approved proceeding with planning for a Bicentennial Student Center, a new building that would fill a gap in on-campus space for social interaction - a need that students have identified in surveys and focus groups.

  Timothy Webster and Maura Reilly were recognized at the 13th annual Rebecca Jeanne Andrew Memorial Award ceremony held April 14. The awards provide funds for primate research.

  Miami University student Iordan Ganev, a sophomore mathematics and statistics and environmental science co-major from Oxford, has been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship - the most prestigious award of its type for undergraduates in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

  Miami University's Summer Undergraduate Mathematical Science Research Institute (SUMSRI) is one of two exemplary programs nationwide that have been selected as "Mathematics Programs That Make a Difference" by the American Mathematical Society's Committee on the Profession. The programs were recognized for their "outstanding work in training and mentoring students from minority groups underrepresented in the profession."

  Yildirim Dilek, professor of geology, and Thomas W. Speh, Rees Distinguished Professor of Marketing, each will receive Miami University's prestigious Benjamin Harrison Medallion during May commencement. The announcement was made during faculty assembly April 16.

  Four Miami University art students recently achieved honors. Liz Beard, Whitney Sage and Joanna Lord, all seniors, had paintings accepted in "Rites of Passage," an exhibition at Cincinnati's Manifest Gallery that opens with a reception 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 18.

  Capturing 200 years and beyond in one design earned Miami University junior Erin Kana accolades as her Bicentennial Celebration logo was selected to officially represent Miami's two centuries (1809-2009), as well as its future in public higher education.
