Flags of their home countries greeted Miami's new international students on the porch of Lewis Place during the New International Graduate Student reception.
  • Tom Luo, Miami Online learning Designer, and Robbyn Abbitt, GIS coordinator for the department of Geography, received a University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) Central Region Award for Excellence in Instructional Design. They are recognized for their collaborative development of GEO543, Python Programming for Geospatial Applications, a course that serves the Geographic Information Science Certificate. The Excellence in Instructional Design Award recognizes courses that raise the bar for innovation and student engagement. The GEO543 course stands out for the way it translates an intensive lab-based environment to an online format. 
  • Cricket (Dawna) Meehan, director, and Debora Robison, project administrator, of the Center for School-Based Mental Health Programs in the department of Psychology, received a grant for $650,000 from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, of which $545,750 is awarded for a project entitled "Youth & Young Adult (ages 10-25) Early Intervention (EI) Initiative." The remaining $104,250 of this award is designated to the project and directed by Sarah Woodruff, director of the Discovery Center for Evaluation, Research, and Professional Development.  
  • Jessica McCarty, associate professor of Geography, received $67,889 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for a project entitled "Contributing to the NASA Wildfire Applications Program: An Invited Science Mission Directorate Proposal."
  • Fazeel Khan and Kumar Singh, professors of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and Jennifer Blue, professor of Physics, received a grant for $65,143 from the Ohio Department of Higher Education for the project entitled "Choose Ohio First - Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) in STEM Scholars at Miami University."
  • Jeffrey Hunger, assistant professor of Psychology, received a grant for $235,492 from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "Collaborative Research: Examining the Stress-Related Cyclical Nature of Socioeconomic Status Stigma." 
  • Gerard (Trace) Poll, associate professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology, received a grant for $430,604 from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Research Enhancement Award program for his project  "Improving Social Communication Assessment of Adolescents at Risk for Communication Disorders."
  • Rock Mancini, assistant professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, received a grant for $319,483 from the National Cancer Institute for a project entitled "Exploiting Cancer Metabolism and Drug Efflux with Bystander-Assisted Immunotherapy."
  • Paul Flaspohler, professor of Psychology and director of research and evaluation for  the Center for Human Development, Learning, and Technology, received a grant for $174,212 from the Department of Defense for the project "On Site Installation Evaluation Research Director."
  • Michelle Cosmah, clinical professor, Nathaniel Bryan, assistant professor, and Paula Saine, John Heckert Professor of Literacy, of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry; and Leah Wasburn-Moses, professor, and Sarah Watt, associate professor, of Educational Psychology, received a grant for $499,061 from the Ohio Department of Education, pass-through funds from the U. S. Department of Education and the Federal CARES Act, of which $459,101 is awarded for the project “Miami University Learning Lab: A New Tutoring Hub." The remaining $39,960 is awarded to Sarah Woodruff, director of the Discovery Center for Evaluation, Research, and Professional Learning, for the same project.
  • Dean Smith, clinical professor of Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health, was the lead author of a new paper,The influence of flexion distraction spinal manipulation on patients with lumbar spinal stenosis: A prospective, open-label, single-arm, pilot study, published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies.
  • Joel Malin, associate professor of Educational Leadership, was selected to be a fellow in next year’s Mid-American Conference Academic Leadership Development Program, which allows faculty to gain valuable knowledge and experience in academic leadership by working closely with select administrators from other colleges and universities in the MAC.
