Miami students place first in podcast competition

Mar 03, 2011

Three Miami University students studying foreign language education won first place and shared a $500 award in a podcast competition sponsored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Corbin Mathias, senior German and Social Studies Education major, Christine Hartz, senior Spanish Education major, and Xue Qin, senior Chinese Education major, designed and created the podcast, which highlights the benefits of learning a new language.

The students produced the prize-winning podcast video, titled “Twenty-first Century Learners and Language,” as part of a foreign language teaching methods class (EDT 444) taught by Martha E. Castañeda, assistant professor of teacher education.

This is the second time in three years that Miami foreign language education students have taken top honors in the national competition.

The podcast swept the post-secondary category of the competition in two categories: popular vote and the judges selection.
