Miami Earns Excellent Grade in National Magazine
Aug 23, 2010Miami University has earned a spot on PARADE Magazine’s College A-List
as one of the nation’s best large public universities. In the Aug. 22
issue, Miami is one of only 25 large public universities listed. The
results are based on assessments of high school guidance counselors
across the country who were asked to recommend “outstanding schools that
often fly under the radar.”
“Miami of Ohio has a beautiful campus and very happy students. It
offers good diversity in the curriculum and does a nice job of making a
big school feel small and manageable,” counselors told the magazine.
Survey results from 43 top high school guidance counselors
nationwide were compiled by an independent counselor on behalf of PARADE
Magazine. Respondents say large public universities provide the best of
both worlds for students seeking individual attention as well as a rich
social scene, and the outstanding schools, like Miami, are often
overlooked by students.
Miami University’s commitment to student development is illustrated
by these examples, among others: More than 2,000 undergraduates work
with professors on funded research every year and 44 percent of students
study abroad. As cited in a new Washington Monthly
ranking, Miami also successfully graduates many more students than its
predicted graduation rate, based on the number of low-income students.
PARADE Magazine’s survey also evaluated the country’s best small
public schools, private schools and liberal arts schools among other
categories. In total, more than 300 universities are included in this
year’s results.
PARADE Magazine is distributed to more than 400 newspapers nationwide and read by more than 71 million people.
