Danny Sauter

I like the intersection of money and meaning, which is why I'm involved in Miami's social entrepreneurship program. It combines business with social change.

What the Miami Experience means to me

I like the intersection of money and meaning, which is why I'm involved in Miami's social entrepreneurship program. Through that, I'm the president of Edun LIVE On Campus, a collegiate offshoot of the Edun LIVE brand, a socially responsible clothing company started by U2 singer Bono. We were the first university to team up with him. We buy T-Shirts ethically made in Africa and partner with student groups by customizing them for their use.

My other passion is new media. I'm the technology director for Miami's Associated Student Government (ASG). My job is to use technology to improve campus life. I'm working on a new website, Ideas for Miami, which will be like an online suggestion box. Students will be able to submit ideas for improving Miami and/or vote on other students' ideas. ASG will then work to implement the most popular suggestions.

Also, through some Miami alums, I've been able to work part-time for a web design company based in my hometown, Columbus, called DynamIt. I've done sales, public relations, and marketing for them. It's a great opportunity to see how the real world of business works.

My Inside Guide

  • My favorite place to eat on campus is Alexander Dining Hall. I like the Montgomery Inn sandwich, which is a BBQ pulled pork sandwich. Off campus, I like Bagel & Deli, a hole-in-the-wall place where I get the "Banana Surprise" bagel. For entertainment, I like to go to concerts. I've seen Girl Talk and Matt Kearney, and I also like the student a cappella groups, the Remnants, the Cheezies, and the Misfitz.

  • Choosing Miami

When I was making my decision, I talked to a lot of recent alums, and they all had positive things to say about Miami. They talked about the sense of community here, the great mentorship programs, and the variety of ways that students can get involved. I knew if I came here, I'd be able to create my own personalized experience but still have the resources of a larger university.
  • Connecting

As a freshman, I was assigned to live in Peabody Hall. I wasn't sure I would like it because it's located on the edge of campus. But I came to love it. The building is historic—like living in an old-fashioned hotel—and the grounds are beautiful. Plus, residents take classes together in the dorm through the "Courses in Common" program. So we not only socialized together, we studied together.
