Work[ing] for Athletic Media Relations, I'm behind the scenes at sporting events ... I'm constantly on the phone with ESPN and other media outlets.

What the Miami Experience means to me

My dad is a big business guy, and when I was younger, he traveled a lot. One of the things that was always in the back of my mind was how I loved hearing about the places he went to and the people he met.

When I came to Miami, I thought I would follow in his footsteps and major in business, but I'm not really much of a numbers guy. Then in my sophomore year, I had a friend who was a political science major, and she knew I was interested in foreign policy and encouraged me to check out the Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs major.

I'm happy with my choice. I honesty feel that all the professors in the political science department have done a phenomenal job and are under-recognized for what they do. I really enjoy Professor Walt Vanderbush. He teaches Latin American politics, and he's a phenomenal teacher. He has so much passion for what he's talking about.

I'm involved in a number of student groups that focus on international issues. One is "Save Darfur." I took a class last semester in contemporary African politics, and it opened my eyes to the problems in Darfur.

Outside my major, I work for Athletic Media Relations. I'm behind the scenes at sporting events like hockey games, basketball games, football, even swimming. My job is to help the sports information director write stories and gather statistics. I'm constantly on the phone with ESPN and other media outlets.

I'm also an intern for Institutional Relations, which is the lobbying body of the University. My role is to monitor state legislation on the House and the Senate floor that could affect Miami employees and students.

I want to get into government after I graduate. My end goal is to be a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. In the fall, I’m going to study abroad in Geneva. A lot of the world's international nonprofits are stationed there, and the program offers the opportunity for students to intern with them while studying.

My Inside Guide

  • On campus, I like Scott Hall, especially the chicken potato bowl. It's a hearty meal that makes you feel like you're back home; that's especially good when home is 1,000 miles away. Off campus, I'm a huge sushi fan. I love Sushi Nara, and I love Tonic, which also serves sushi. For fun, I like to go to 3 Trees Irish Pub. It's by far the best bar. It's a hotel bar, and nobody knows about it, so it doesn't get too crazy.

  • Choosing Miami

I knew I wanted to go to college in the Midwest. When I was in elementary school, my best friend moved to Mason, just outside Cincinnati; he chose Miami and convinced me to come here, too. When I came up to visit in high school, I distinctly remember driving into town on Rt. 27 and getting goose bumps when I saw the campus. I felt comfortable here right away.
  • Connecting

I have many different friends. There are the people I work with and the people I meet in class. My main group of friends is seven guys who include my buddy, David, the guy who convinced me to come here. It's funny, if we don't see each other in a day, one of us will call and say, "Where were you?"
