Health

Miami University Student Health Services (SHS) provides acute care to all Oxford, Hamilton, and Middletown campus students.

Located at 421 S. Campus Ave., the Health Services Center is staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and medical assistants offering primary care, gynecology, urgent care, and immunization services. SHS also provides laboratory, x-ray, and pharmacy services for students seen at the Health Services Center.

When calling 513-529-3000 between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., students are guaranteed a same-day appointment; however, walk-in visits are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. If no clinician is available, an appointment may be scheduled for the following day. All services provided by SHS (except for anonymous HIV testing) are billed to the student's health insurance company. Any co-pay required may be made with Visa or MasterCard or charged to the student's bursar bill.

Special medical transportation to the Health Services Center is also provided for ill or injured students by calling 529-2277.

Counseling

The Student Counseling Service is a campus mental health resource that offers a variety of services, including individual and group counseling, psychoeducation workshops, and psychiatric treatment. The Psychology Clinic, operating in conjunction with the Department of Psychology's clinical graduate program, also offers services for a nominal fee.

The City of Oxford's Community Counseling & Crisis Center provides 24-hour hotlines for assistance during non-business hours (523-4146, 894-7002, 424-5498).

Safety

At Miami, we understand that safety is a concern for students and parents alike. For this reason, we offer a number of safety programs and take various precautions to ensure the well-being of the University community.

On patrol at all times, the Miami University Police Department is a full-service police agency with 29 officers commissioned by the State of Ohio. Miami Police take reports, investigate criminal offenses, enforce traffic and parking regulations, and encourage crime prevention. They routinely inform the Miami community of crimes by sending electronic crime alerts to every Miami e-mail address, posting flyers, and informing the press. Finally, the police department's team of community relations specialists work with residence halls to stress crime prevention, personal safety, and to maintain open lines of communication with Miami students.

Miami has also established a comprehensive management plan that includes response procedures and strategies for communication in the event of an emergency. A free text messaging service is available to students, faculty, and staff at all of Miami's Butler County locations for notification of serious emergencies and other events that may close the campus. Please visit the police department's website to register with the Miami Emergency Text Messaging System. For more information on crisis management, see Miami's Emergency Preparedness website.

Students traveling alone at night can take advantage of the Miami Metro bus service or call Nighttime Door-to-Door (NDD) to request an escort within the campus or to and from off-campus locations (529-2277).

Residence Halls

In addition to safety programs, a number of other precautions are taken to protect students living in residence halls.

  • Residence halls are locked 24 hours a day, requiring students to use their I.D. cards for access. Visitors use the phones located outside each resident hall to summon an escort into the building.
  • Along with the oversight provided by full-time professionals and student staff serving each residence hall, annual fire drills and evacuation training help ensure that students are safe and prepared in case of emergencies.
  • The smoke detectors in every student room are serviced and cleaned annually, and all public areas have fire alarm systems. All Miami residence halls meet or exceed fire code and safety standards.
