Nathan Souther
Physics (concentration in Experimental Quantum Optics)

Personal: Nathan received his bachelor's degree in Physics from Gustavus Adolphus College, located not far from his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Research experience: Nathan completed an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) at the University of North Dakota and also worked for a summer at Minnetronix, a company that designs and manufactures medical devices.

Career goals: "I would like to go into industry and work where I can still use physics and apply what I've learned about lasers."

Practical Application: Nathan's work involves cooling and trapping Rubidium atoms and loading them into an optical lattice. Through the study of cold atoms, Nathan will gain information that has practical applications for quantum computing and nanolithography.

One-on-one: "I chose Miami because it was one of the few masters-only physics programs. Being a small program with strong experimental work, it allows more one-on-one interaction between professors and student researchers."
