Chemistry and Biochemistry (Ph.D.)
Personal: Sriram originates from Madras, India, where he received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Madras.
Practical experience: As a project assistant at the Center for Human Genetics in India, Sriram worked on gene targeting and establishing the human embryonic germ cell line.
Career goals: Sriram plans to establish himself in the field of neuro-biochemistry in an academic environment and eventually move back home to India.
Discovery: Sriram is determining the structure and function of two glyoxalase-like proteins, Ethe1 and Glx2-1. His research will allow a deeper understanding of human diseases and infantile disorders as well as a greater knowledge of plant physiology that can contribute to crop enhancement.
Research at Miami: "I chose Miami because it is a small school with a strong focus towards research education. It's easy for graduate students to communicate with any faculty members, unlike at big schools. We also have state-of-the-art research facilities and instrumentation that include the first and only 850 MHz NMR spectrometer in North America."
