Financial Aid About 85 percent of our full-time graduate students receive financial aid, in most cases to cover tuition and living expenses.
Miami provides numerous associateships, scholarships, and assistantships. The university deadline for applying for a grant-in-aid is March 1; however, financial aid and admission deadlines vary by program, so you should check with your specific program for the exact dates.
Graduate Awards Assistance is available in several forms and is generally awarded to graduate students by individual programs on the basis of academic promise. All graduate assistants receive remission of the instructional fee and out-of-state tuition surcharge (if applicable) for the length of their appointment. All graduate students pay the info services fee, half the general fee, and half the metro fee.
Many opportunities are available for graduate assistant appointments for part-time teaching and research. Because awards vary with each program, check with your program for specific amounts and responsibilities of the award.
Graduate assistantships are ordinarily offered on a half-time basis. Graduate assistants work an average of 18 to 20 hours per week and carry a minimum of 10 graduate credit hours each semester.
Modified graduate assistantships require eight hours of work per week and require the student to carry 12 graduate credit hours each semester. These awards are offered primarily by the Richard T. Farmer School of Business.
Teaching associateships/doctoral associateships are awarded to students who have already earned a master's degree. These awards require half-time duties for students pursuing a doctoral degree or a specialist in education degree. Also, these students must carry a minimum of 10 graduate credit hours each semester.
Residence hall assistantships are primarily for students who plan careers in college student personnel work. These awards also include room and board.
Graduate summer scholarships are granted for the summer to students who have held graduate assistantships or associateships during the academic year. Information is sent in March to all eligible students. Service-free graduate summer scholarships are awarded for up to $1,800.
Graduate grants-in-aid, for full-time graduate students, waive the instructional fee and out-of-state tuition surcharge (if applicable). There are no stipend payments and no required duties. Contact the Graduate School.
If you are interested in applying for a financial aid award in the form of an assistantship, complete the Application for Graduate Award (PDF 442KB) after you submit the Application for Admission. Print and mail the completed form along with other application materials directly to the academic program in which you intend to study. Or, save the completed form and email it as an attachment to the graduate director in the academic program in which you intend to study. If you have any questions, contact the Graduate School.
