a Non-Campus is (1) any building or property owned or controlled by a student organization that is officially recognized by Miami; or (2) any building or property owned or controlled by Miami that is used in direct support of or in relation to, Miami's educational purposes, is frequently used by students, and is not within the same reasonably contiguous geographic area of Miami. The Oxford campus has both types of non-campus property. Buildings owned and controlled by student organizations include fraternity houses. Non-contiguous buildings used by Miami in direct support of its educational purposes include the Architecture Studio at 1300 Vine in Over-the-Rhine area.

b Public Property—For 2003, the University reported crime statistics for the entire City of Oxford. The City of Oxford statistics for criminal offenses Campus and Non-Campus are reported in those categories. For 2004, the University, based on the directions provided in the Handbook for Campus Crime Reporting, did not include the crime statistics for the entire City of Oxford. The University reported City of Oxford statistics in the Campus, Non-Campus and Public Property categories as directed. Thus, the decrease in crimes reported under Public Property is the result of a reporting change and is not due to any significant change in reported crimes.

However, Miami University owns property throughout the City of Oxford, and during the academic year Miami students comprise the majority of residents in the city. Because our students live, work, and learn throughout the entire Oxford community, Miami has elected to continue to report the 2004 and 2005 statistics for the entire City of Oxford (other than the statistics included in Campus and Non-Campus) in Appendix A.

c "Non-Verified" reports are reports that have been made to campus security authorities other than the Miami University Police or Oxford Police. These reporting authorities include the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution, the Office of Residence Life, coaches, and advisers to student organizations. Often these reports lack sufficient information for the University to accurately classify the crime or location.

Lack of verification does not reflect the veracity of the report. Statistics contained in this category may duplicate crimes concurrently reported to one or more security authorities, including but not limited to the university and city police.

d Hate Crimes. Hate crimes are crimes that manifest evidence that the victim was intentionally selected because of the victim's actual or perceived race (RA), religion (RE), sexual orientation (SO), gender (G), ethnicity (E) or disability (D).

The City of Oxford provides reports for the entire City of Oxford. Miami University owns property throughout the City of Oxford, and during the academic year, the majority of the residents in the City of Oxford are Miami University students. Because our students live, work, and learn throughout the entire Oxford community, Miami University has exceeded the Hate Crime reporting requirements and provided statistics for the City of Oxford for 2003. Beginning with 2004 statistics, Miami will only report those Hate Crimes occurring on the Campus, Non-Campus and Public Property categories as directed.

For the U.S. Department of Education Campus Crime and Security Survey (http://ope.ed.gov/security), the 2003 statistics are reported in the Hate Crimes-Local & State Police categories on the U.S. Department of Education Campus Crime and Security Survey. The 2004 statistics will be reported under Hate Crimes-Public Property.

* For 2003, the arrest statistics for the entire City of Oxford are reported in Campus and Non-Campus as defined and the balance are reported in Public Property. For 2004, the University, based on the directions provided in the Handbook for Campus Crime Reporting, did not include the arrest statistics for the entire City of Oxford. The University reported City of Oxford statistics in Campus, Non-Campus and Public Property as directed. Thus, the decrease in arrests reported under Public Property results from a reporting change and is not due to any actual significant change in arrests.

For the U.S. Department of Education Campus Crime and Security Survey (http://ope.ed.gov/security), the 2003 statistics are reported in the Arrests-Local & State Police categories on the U.S. Department of Education Campus Crime and Security Survey. The University will report its 2004 statistics under Arrests-Public Property for the U.S. Department of Education Campus Crime and Security Survey.
