Miami is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for all students and members of the university community. While Miami's campus is relatively safe, crime does occur on campus. Each member of the university community has a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of the community. Everyone must participate in crime prevention efforts and develop good personal safety habits.

The department performs the following duties:
- Patrols campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by car, bicycle, and on foot
- Evaluates reported crimes, conducts investigations, and effects arrests
- Enforces all state and local laws
- Works cooperatively with the Oxford police and other local law enforcement agencies
- Works cooperatively with the Office of Judicial Affairs (now called the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution) to enforce Miami's Code of Student Conduct
- Distributes campus crime alerts

- Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class
- Presentations to small groups on a variety of safety topics
- Registration of bicycles
- Engraving and videotaping of personal property

Registration of Sexual Predators
Under Ohio's Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) law, responsibility for registration of sexual predators has been assigned to the sheriff's office. Information concerning the presence of registered sex offenders is available at the Butler County Sheriff's website, www.butlersheriff.org.
