Despite the fact that alcohol use is illegal for most college undergraduates, alcohol continues to be widely used on and around most college campuses today. Miami is no exception. Miami's growing concern about the use and abuse of alcohol led to the adoption of mandatory penalties for alcohol violations.

Intoxication or Negative Behavior Involving Use of Alcohol

  • First offense requires a student to complete four hours of substance abuse education and complete a comprehensive substance abuse assessment. All costs associated with the program and the assessment must be paid by the student.
  • Second offense results in suspension from the university either immediately or at the close of the semester.
Prohibited Use of Alcohol
  • First offense requires a student to complete two hours of substance abuse education. The cost of the program must be paid by the student.
  • Second offense requires a comprehensive substance abuse assessment. All costs associated with the assessment must be paid by the student.
  • Third offense results in suspension from the university either immediately or at the close of the semester.
  • Any combination of three alcohol violations will result in suspension.

For the complete alcohol policy, refer to The Student Handbook, Sections 02.105 and 02.202 of the Code of Student Conduct and Appendix F.
