Students moving off campus are living on their own for the first time in their lives. To help with this transition, Miami and the City of Oxford created and maintain a one-stop online resource, oxfordoffcampus.org, specifically aimed at off-campus students. The site contains important information about landlord/tenant responsibilities, Oxford City housing codes, and safety issues.
Off-campus housing appeals to students seeking a sense of independence, but it also means students are no longer subject to residence hall regulations such as bans on smoking, candles, and underage drinking, all of which can cause or contribute to fires. National statistics indicate that most fire fatalities involving college students occur in off-campus housing.
Remembering important fire safety tips, including those for handling space heaters and fire extinguishers, can help students protect their property and save their lives.
While the university cannot tell students where they can or cannot live off campus, you as parents can. We encourage you to guide your child as he or she makes this decision. Ask questions before a lease is signed. Insist on seeing the lease before it is signed. If you cannot visit the rental property personally, call the landlord.
