How does Miami coordinate diversity efforts and assess change?
In 2007, President Hodge created the position of Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity. The Associate Vice President (AVP) leads the efforts of the University community in the development and implementation of a vision and plans for advancing diversity. The AVP sits on the Presidentâs Executive Committee and reports directly to the President. The AVP also sits on the Council of Academic Deans, chairs the University Multicultural Council, and convenes a variety of advisory and interest groups. Dr. Christine Taylor will be joining Miami University as Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity on March 1, 2008. The University Multicultural Council (UMC) became a committee of the University Senate in 2006. As a Senate committee, the UMC fulfills an advisory role for the University Senate while maintaining its advisory function for senior administrators. It engages in long-range planning to accomplish the following: 1) build an intellectual community that recognizes that diverse experiences create a richer educational experience for all students, 2) foster a more inclusive campus climate, and 3) foster the development of diversity-related competencies among faculty, staff, and students. It assesses and identifies trends, progress, and problems pertaining to campus diversity and climate. It also encourages and facilitates campus dialogue to promote understanding and a constructive exchange of views on matters of diversity.
