101 Introduction to Accounting I (3)
Introduction to double-entry accounting systems including the general ledger, special journals, and subsidiary ledgers. Financial data recording and compilation of reports for service and retail firms. Includes basic payroll procedures. Prerequisite: If your math placement results indicate that you should take MTH 001, 002 and/or 007, complete those courses before taking BTE 101. If your math placement results indicate that you should start with MTH 101.3 or higher, you may take BTE 101 at any time.
102 Introduction to Accounting II (3)
Continuation of BTE 101 with focus on recording and compiling financial data for retail enterprises. Includes inventory valuation and control, plant asset valuation and depreciation, and cash flow statements. Prerequisite: BTE 101 or equivalent work experience and BTE 109, which can be taken concurrently.
103 Introduction to Finance (3)
Survey of the field of finance including sources of financing; financial markets; short, intermediate, and long term financing; and financial management techniques and practices. Prerequisite: BTE 101, 106, or permission of instructor.
105 Introduction to Marketing (3)
General survey of the field of marketing including the marketing concept, management of the marketing-mix, analysis of the marketing environment, use of marketing information, understanding of buyer behavior, and selection of target markets.
106 Introduction to Business and the Economy (3)
Introduction to various functional areas of business and everyday business and economic principles and problems including consumer choice, supply and demand, money, banking system, investment, growth, inflation, government policy, taxes, and employment.
108 Introduction to Business Law (3)
Survey of business law including the legal system and environment in which business operates. Problems and solutions are investigated in areas of contracts, sales, bailments, commercial paper, agency and employment, partnerships and corporations, risk bearing devices, and property.
109 Quantitative Business Methods--An Introduction (3)
Survey of the gathering, analysis, and presentation of business data. Data summarization, graphs, index numbers, time series, probability and statistics. Emphasis on the use of these methods as tools for solving typical business problems. This course is intended to help you with other courses and should be taken early in your program. Prerequisite: MTH 101.3, concurrent or prior registration in BTE 181, or permission of instructor.
111 Introduction to Management (3)
Introduction to principles and practices of managing organizations. Exposure to contemporary management issues, functions of management, and the interrelationship between business organizations and the environment. Emphasis on development of supervisory skills.
112 Introduction to Human Resources Management (3)
Emphasis on personnel function, management-worker relations, union and government regulation of the work place. Prerequisite: BTE 111 or permission of instructor.
121 Keyboarding (1-3; maximum 3)
Divided into three five-week modules according to individual's need, ranging from learning the keyboard to formatting letters, tables, and documents. Summer only.
121.N Keyboarding - Numeric Keypad (1)
Student works independently to learn the numeric keypad by touch; develops speed and accuracy to apply this to a variety of data entry operations.
125 Medical Office Simulation (3)
Specialized simulation package for the student preparing for a position in the field of medical office administration. Emphasizes methods and procedures encountered when processing medical documents. Prerequisite: BTE 121 and 226 or permission of instructor.
128 Office Management--An Introduction (3)
Study of job functions of the office manager, which include principles and processes, office environment, people, and productivity.
181 Computers and Business (3)
Hands-on course emphasizing role of computers in business, business information systems, and use of business software. Develop skill in using word processing, business graphics, electronic spreadsheets, database, and the Internet. Software utilized is regularly updated. Windows and Microsoft Office Professional currently used. Credit not given for both BTE 181 and SAN 154.
201 Federal Income Tax Procedures (3)
Preparation of federal income tax forms for individuals, including preparation of supplemental schedules. Introduction to corporate tax. Includes a computerized tax program. Prerequisite: BTE 101, 181 or equivalent.
202 Payroll Records and Accounting (2)
Methods of computing wages and salaries, maintaining payroll records, and completing government reports and transmittal forms for federal, state, and local payroll taxes. Includes a computerized payroll practice set. Prerequisite: BTE 101, 181, or equivalent.
203 Computerized Accounting (3)
Fundamentals of computerized accounting systems, including receivable, payable, payroll, inventory, and general ledger systems for a service or merchandising firm. Conversion from a manual accounting system to an automated system. Utilizes Windows-based software. Prerequisite: BTE 101, 181.
204 Cost Accounting (3)
Accounting for materials, labor, and overhead in a manufacturing environment. Includes job order, process, and standard costing systems. Introduces Activity Based Costing. Some computerized applications. Prerequisite: BTE 102, 109, and 181 or equivalent.
205 Corporate Accounting (3)
Continuation of BTE 102. Financial accounting procedures unique to corporations. Emphasis on ethical issues, internal controls and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Utilizes team approach and case studies. Some computer applications. Prerequisite: BTE 102, 109, and 181 or equivalent.
207 Management Planning and Control (3)
Exploration of how accounting data is used by management to make decisions. Emphasizes budgeting, cash flow analysis, cost behavior, and profit planning. Utilizes team approach and case studies. Prerequisite: BTE 102, 109, 111, 181 or permission of instructor.
220 Professional Practice (0)
Students participating in associate's degree co-op program register for this course during semesters when they are on work assignment.
221 Professional Development (1)
For students approaching the major career transition from college to work, either as a graduating student or as a co-op student. Focuses on clarifying plans, preparing resumes, improving interviewing skills, the job search process, assessing employment trends, and identifying and using career development resources.
224 Medical Terminology (3)
Terminology and anatomy are studied using CD-ROM. Workbook applications are used to test and reinforce knowledge. Prerequisite: BTE 226.
225 Office Problems (3)
For second-year business students who have completed computer-based courses. Various office problems addressed, analyzed, and researched. Decision-making and problem-solving skills are stressed as well as independent thought and creativity. Communication skills emphasized. Prerequisite: BTE 181 and 226 or permission of instructor.
227 Records/Information Management and Control (3)
Study of the process of managing business information recorded in any form—digital, electronic, or paper—from time of creation until final disposition. Topics include establishing an information system, records retention programs, automated storage and retrieval systems, micrographics, forms design and analysis, and vital records protection. Prerequisite: BTE 111, 181 or permission of instructor.
231 Real Estate Principles and Practices (2)
Introduction to real estate studies, including industry structure, economics, marketing, legal environment, finance, appraisal, and other related topics.
233 Real Estate Law (2)
Basic law for real estate practitioner. Topics include real estate agency law, Ohio real estate license law, property rights, estates and interests in land, deeds, contracts, mortgages and liens, civil rights, tenancy, land contract, state and federal regulations.
234 Real Estate Finance (2)
Examination of institutions, methods, instruments, and procedures involved in financing real estate. Prerequisite: BTE 231 or permission of instructor.
235 Real Estate Appraisal (2)
Study of methodology of appraising real property and the theory underlying appraisal techniques. Prerequisite: BTE 231 or permission of instructor.
241 Management of Business Operations (3)
Introduction to management concepts and procedures in controlling business operations. Topics include Total Quality Management, facilities planning and layout, materials handling, inventory, production scheduling and control, quality control, work measurement and incentives. Prerequisite: BTE 109, 111 or permission of instructor.
242 Management of Small Business Operations (3)
Introduction to management concepts and procedures in starting, developing, and operating small businesses. Methods of planning, organizing, operating, and controlling small businesses are discussed. Prerequisite: BTE 101, 109, 111 or permission of instructor.
243 Management-Worker Relations (3)
Examines theories, skills, and coping mechanisms necessary to understand and manage human behavior in the organization. Focuses on ways organizations and members affect one another and instructs students on how to diagnose and deal with problems in an organizational setting. Areas of emphasis include development of human relation skills, group facilitation, communication, time management, business ethics, diversity, and managing work place conflicts in union and nonunion settings. Prerequisite: BTE 111 or permission of instructor.
261 Customer Service and Sales (3)
Introduction to customer service and sales with emphasis on identifying and serving customers' needs before, during, and after sale; understanding sales management function; personal selling process; and importance of meeting customers' needs in today's competitive business environment. Prerequisite: BTE 105 or permission of instructor.
262 Retail Management--An Introduction (3)
Introduction to retailing, with emphasis on major types of stores; non-store retailing; merchandising, pricing, and promotional strategies; current trends in retailing. Prerequisite: BTE 105 or permission of instructor.
263 Advertising and Promotion--An Introduction (3)
Introduction to advertising and sales promotion with emphasis on communication process, understanding consumer behavior, nature and management of advertising, advertising production, and analysis of sales promotion including purpose and techniques. Prerequisite: BTE 105 or permission of instructor.
281 Word Processing (3)
Practical hands-on experience for learning fundamentals of word processing on the computer. Create, store, retrieve, edit, and print various business documents and reports. Formatting and English-usage skills emphasized. Software utilized is regularly updated. Windows and Microsoft Word currently used. Course helps prepare students for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) expert-level certification in Microsoft Word. Prerequisite: BTE 181 or permission of instructor.
282 Computer-Based Business Analysis (3)
Analytical methods in management information and decision-making situations using Microsoft Excel. Also helps students prepare for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) expert-level Microsoft Excel certification. Prerequisite: BTE 181 or permission of instructor.
283 Desktop Publishing
Focuses on use of microcomputer-based systems using software such as PageMaker, Correl Draw and Publish to produce business publications such as newsletters, advertising fliers, catalogs, brochures, business proposals. Emphasis is given to page layout and design including integration of text, graphics, photography, and data. Prerequisite: BTE 181 or permission of instructor.
284 Technology for Knowledge Workers (3)
Focuses on how productivity software and the Internet drive knowledge-worker tasks such as electronic calendaring, collaboration, electronic-document management, and the creation of workgroup Intranets. Microsoft Office and other productivity software used. Prerequisite: BTE 181 or permission of instructor.
285 Business Information Management (3)
Focuses on understanding, from an end-user perspective, how databases provide the information necessary to run businesses. Emphasis is on Internet businesses. Also helps students prepare for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) expert-level certification in Microsoft Access. Prerequisite: BTE 181 or permission of instructor.
286 Business and the Internet (3)
Focuses on the impact of the Internet on business. Topics include E-commerce, corporate Intranets and Extranets, portals, security issues, Web site planning, and design and implementation. Utilizes Microsoft Front Page software. Prerequisite: BTE 181 or permission of instructor.
290 Special Topics in Business Technology (1-3, repeatable with permission of chair; maximum 9)
