185 Computer Spreadsheets Using Lotus 1-2-3 (1)
Emphasizes spreadsheet operations, formatting, assumption tables, macros, and menus as well as spreadsheet based graphics, data manager functions, and a comparison of other spreadsheet-related software.
MPT 235 Information Systems: Concepts, Technology, and Applications (3)
Focuses on critical personal and organizational issues of management information systems (MIS) function. Exposure to important technical topics related to computer hardware and software. Unifying theme is the types of computer-based applications being used at different levels of an organization and how computer technology assists individuals in performing their jobs. Student is provided a context in which to evaluate role of information in various organizations. Prerequisite: spreadsheet proficiency.
281 Advanced Business Microcomputer Applications (3)
Studies advanced operating system functions, hard disk set up, use, and management, disk utilities, and selected productivity software. Prerequisite: MIS 235.
285 Online Information Systems with Data Base (3)
Examines characteristics of online data base management system (DBMS) using common business applications. Provides more advanced knowledge of the relationship between data structure and user access to data. Provides hands-on experience with user oriented DBMS and other interactive software. Prerequisite: MIS 235.
330 Professional Practice (0)
Students participating in an internship program register for this course during the semester they are on work assignment. Prerequisite: permission of departmental internship coordinator.
MPT 381 Business Production and Presentation Graphics (3)
Introduces graphic theory and concepts, programming process for creating graphics, selected graphics production software packages, and presentation graphics software packages. Provides hands-on experience with presentation graphics software. Prerequisite: MIS 235.
MPT 385 Management Information and Decision Support Systems (3)
Examination of hardware, software, and organizational components of management information and decision support systems (DSS), management's responsibility for such systems, the use of these systems for electronic commerce, and a study of the business information system environment. Prerequisite: MIS 235 and 381.
MPC 412 Communicating Through Multimedia (3)
Capstone course designed to address the effects of communication technology in the workplace. Integrates multimedia computer technology, group and presentational communication, and principles of media production. Team-based multimedia development approach is used to integrate complementary skills and expertise from different students to generate applications for clients. Prerequisite: MIS 381. Cross-listed with COM 412.
435/535 Advanced Business Database: Applications and Technology (3)
Studies the concepts, analysis, development, and management of advanced business databases such as object-oriented databases and client-server computing technologies in a distributed data processing environment. Focuses on the role and impact of client-server computing in business. Information system standards, applications, implementation strategies and framework, unique advantages and disadvantages, and the relationship of distributed database to other functional areas such as finance, production, and marketing examined. Exploration of advanced database management and implementation issues to prepare students to pursue a career with emphasis on database management. Credit not given for both MIS 435 and SAN 485. Prerequisite: MIS 285.
445/545 Business Data Communications and Applications (3)
Familiarizes students with concepts and applications of data communications technologies in a business environment. Emphasis on contemporary data communications technologies such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), Electronic Meeting System (EMS), Electronic Mail System, Multinational Information Systems, and the Information Superhighway. Hands-on experience with current data communications technologies such as local area networks (LANs) and wide-area networks (WANs). Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
485/585 Business Information Systems Requirements Analysis (3)
Systems documentation, information gathering and reporting, analysis, and logical design with emphasis on user perspective and management responsibility. Introduction to and hands-on experience with user oriented application generator software such as Focus. Credit not given for both MIS 485, 486 and SAN 472, 475. Prerequisite: MIS 235, DSC 205, ACC 222, MGT 301, FIN 301. Offered first semester only.
486/586 User Business Information Systems Development (3)
Application of system analysis tools and application generator software, introduced in MIS 485, to the design and partial implementation of an information system. Information center and project management issues. Recent advancements in user-oriented productivity improvement software. Formal reports and presentations required. Prerequisite: MIS 485, COM 135. Offered second semester only.
MPC 495 Seminar in Management Information Systems (3)
Includes research, reading, writing, and discussion. Independent research on a topic and company from a management information systems (MIS) perspective. Respond to issues or problems raised in cases in an analytic and creative manner. Present topic report and research to class. Prerequisite: MPF courses and all 200- and 300-level requirements in one of three sequences: MIS major, MIS minor, or MIS Thematic Sequence.
617 Computers and Management Information Systems (MIS) (3)
Provides accelerated review of important computer concepts and study of new computer technologies. Introduces basic management information and decision support system concepts, characteristics, and design. Addresses strategic use of technology and management responsibilities for planning, development, and operation of MIS. Prerequisite: MIS 235.
625 Management Information Systems (3)
Offers rigorous study of information systems (ISs) and related management considerations and issues. Study of IS technology provides a foundation for studying ISs, their development, and management. Underlying theme of the course is the use of IS technology for operating support, improving productivity, and gaining competitive advantage. Students use decision support tools to reinforce IS theory and concepts. Open only to full-time M.B.A. students.
673 Information Systems Development and Implementation (3)
Introduction to management and development of information systems software projects. Focus areas are software project management, information gathering, structured analysis and design techniques, management of software evolution, and computer-assisted software engineering. Prerequisite: MIS 625.
674 Corporate Data Management (3)
Overview of data management concepts and technologies and how they fit into corporate information processing environment. Focus areas are corporate data resource management, database models, design and development of a database and application, and emerging database management systems (DBMS) technology. Prerequisite: MIS 625.
675 Contemporary MIS Topics (3)
Covers contemporary issues. Provides forum to study and research topics of high interest, concern, and potential impact on MIS. Topics can relate to policy, technology, hardware, software, or other MIS related topics. Requires student to select, research, and report on topics of current interest and importance within MIS area. Prerequisite: MIS 625.
685 Online Data Base Management Systems (3)
Overview of data base technology and how it fits into management information system environment. Emphasizes user perspective and addresses both microcomputer and mainframe data base management systems (DBMS) in wide use in business. Requires each student to design and implement data base applications using selected microcomputer and mainframe DBMS technology in business. Prerequisite: MIS 617. Offered infrequently.
690 Advanced Management Information Systems (MIS) Topics (3)
