- 101, 102 Beginner's Course (4, 4)
- Objective: to develop the four language skills of oral comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.
- 105.W Intensive Elementary Italian (8)
- Intensive course, offered only in summer abroad, covers work normally included in 101, 102. Allows student to take a full year's work in eight weeks, 15 hours per week.
Advanced Courses
- 201, 202 Second Year Italian (3, 3)
- Review of grammar, writing skills, and augmentation of vocabulary and idiomatic expression, and an introduction to critical reading. Prerequisite: ITL 102 or 105 or equivalent. ITL 202: CAS-A.
- 205.W Intensive Intermediate Italian (8)
- Intensive course, offered only in summer abroad, covers work normally included in 201, 202, plus structured conversation. Allows student to take a full year's work in eight weeks, 15 hours per week. Prerequisite: ITL 102 or 105 or equivalent. CAS-A.
- MPT 262 Italian Cinema (3)
- Discussion and analysis of major movies and trends in Italian cinema. Topics may vary but attention is given to social and ideological implications of Italian cinema and the way movies produce a critique of cultural mores. Taught in English. Cross-listed with FST 262. CAS-B-LIT.
- 262.1 Cinema Italiano in Italian (1)
- A supplementary hour of lecture and discussion in Italian of the movies and topics covered in FST/ITL 262. In order for ITL 262 to count toward the Italian minor, it must be taken in conjunction with this course, for a total of four semester hours. If only this course (262.1) is taken, one semester hour will apply to the minor. Attendance at ITL 262 movie screenings required. Prerequisite: ITL 201 or 205 or equivalent.
- 301, 302 Introduction to Italian Literature (3, 3)
- Techniques for critical reading in three major genres of drama, poetry, and prose with emphasis on classical literature in 301 and contemporary literature in 302. Prerequisite: ITL 202 or 205 or equivalent. CAS-B-LIT.
- 305.W Intensive Advanced Italian (8)
- Students perfect their ability in the four language skills through practice in oral and written composition and are introduced to various aspects of Italian culture including literature, art, music, history, politics, etc., through lectures, reading, and discussion. Offered only in summer abroad, 15 hours per week for eight weeks. Prerequisite: ITL 202 or 205 or equivalent.
- MPT 364 Italian Humanism and Renaissance (3)
- Examination of Italian literature and thought from the end of the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. Works of Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, the Italian Humanists, and Renaissance writers, such as Castiglione and Machiavelli are read and discussed against the historical background of 14th to 16th century Europe. In translation. Italian minors should take ITL 364.1 concurrently. Cross-listed with ENG 364. Offered every two years. CAS-B-LIT.
- 364.1 Umanesimo e Rinascimento (1)
- This course is meant to be taken in conjunction with ITL 364. It is an extra class hour of discussion in Italian of some of the texts from that course, which Italian minors are required to read in the original. In order for 364 to count toward the Italian minor, it must be taken in conjunction with this course, for a total of four semester hours. This course, taken by itself, may also count toward the minor, for one semester hour. Readings and discussions in Italian. Prerequisite: ITL 301 or 305 or equivalent.
- MPT 401 Dante's Divine Comedy (3)
- Intensive examination of Dante's major work, The Divine Comedy, read in a bilingual edition. Lectures and discussion in English. Italian minors read the poem in the original and take ITL 401.1 concurrently. Cross-listed with ENG 401. CAS-B-LIT. Offered every two years.
- 401.O Dante's Commedia in the Original (1)
- Examination of the original language of Dante's Commedia. Readings, lectures, and discussion in Italian. In order for 401 to count toward the Italian minor, it must be taken in conjunction with this course, for a total of four semester hours. Taken by itself, this course may also count toward the minor for one semester hour. Prerequisite: ITL 301 or 305 or equivalent.
