071 Chinese for Travelers (2)
Course in Chinese for travelers and students of international business covering basic knowledge of the spoken language (Mandarin) in everyday situations. Includes discussions on cultural differences between U.S. and China, the lifestyle of the Chinese people and the economic boom in mainland China today.
101, 102 Elementary Chinese (4,4)
Introduction to modern spoken and written Chinese (kuo-yu). Emphasis on spoken language.
Advanced Courses
201, 202 Second Year Chinese (3,3)
Continued work with modern script and conversation. Prerequisite: CHI 102 or equivalent. 202 is CAS-A.
MPF 251 Chinese Literature in English Translation (3)
Chinese literature to 1800. Masterpieces of Chinese literature including The Book of Songs, Chuang Tzu, the poetry of Li Po and Tu Fu, major novels, and Yuan plays. Discussion of philosophical traditions (Confucianism, Taoism) and other cultural aspects. IIIB, ND. CAS-B-LIT.
MPF 252 Modern Chinese Literature in English Translation (3)
Modern Chinese literature from the Dream of the Red Chamber to the present with special attention to Lu Hsun, Mao Tun, Pa Chin, Eileen Chang, revolutionary Peking opera, writers of the post-Mao era, and historical-cultural background. IIIB, ND. CAS-B-LIT.
MPF 255 Drama in China and Japan in Translation (3)
Provides historical overview of major traditional dramatic art forms of China and Japan: Peking Opera, Noh, Bunraku, and Kabuki. Critically treats and interprets theatrical conventions in each and atteMPTs to clarify aesthetic significance. Includes comparative study of recent theatrical movements in each country and of Western influence. Cross-listed with JPN 255. IIB, IIIB, ND. CAS-B-LIT.
Chinese Cinema and Culture (3)
Study of selected films. Introduces Chinese cinema and, through films, Chinese culture. Works are from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Subject matter is both historical and modern. Knowlege of Chinese is not required. Crosslisted with FST 264.
301, 302 Third Year Chinese (3,3)
Emphasis on developing facility in reading and writing modern Chinese. Some study of classical literature. Prerequisite: CHI 202 or equivalent. Offered infrequently.
