Terrorism alert status and how Miami has responded
Effective March 17, 2003, the nations terrorism alert status was elevated to Condition Orange (high alert). In addition to the recent creation of a Crisis Management Team, Miami has taken the following steps post 9/11:
- Increased patrols by Miami police.
- Implemented additional security at all public events. Depending upon the event and its location, book bags may be inspected and/or banned and other precautions taken, including the use of metal detectors.
- Implemented additional security at the steam plant and other infrastructure sites. In addition, Miami police are assisting Oxford officials in monitoring the citys water plant.
- Designated an Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which would be the nerve center of the universitys response.
At this time, there are no plans to cancel any off-campus or study abroad program. Any decision to cancel programs will be based upon the recommendation of the U.S. Department of State and on-site evaluations. The university is monitoring all advisories closely. All off-campus program directors have been briefed on emergency procedures.
