Apply for Admission

English Language Proficiency

To study at Miami University, you must be able to understand lectures in English from the first day of classes. Because of this, if your native language is not English, you are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or provide alternative evidence of English language proficiency.

To register for the TOEFL online, visit www.toefl.org. Please note that you must take the international TOEFL. Institutional TOEFL scores are not acceptable. To register for the IELTS online, visit www.ielts.org.

If you are accepted for admission at Miami, you will take another English examination before you register for classes. You may be assigned to a special English course, depending on the results. Credit is awarded for this course, but the credit earned may not always satisfy degree requirements. Miami University does not have a full-time intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

To be considered for direct admission into an undergraduate (bachelor's) degree program at Miami University, international students whose native language is not English should have earned either a minimum score of 200 on the computer-based TOEFL, a score of 530 on the paper-based test, or a score of 72 on the Internet-based version. Students who have not taken the TOEFL may still meet Miami's English proficiency requirement through one of the alternatives described below.

Students who do not meet minimum English proficiency score requirements can still be considered for provisional admission pending their enrollment in a program of full-time intensive ESL training. However, registration at Miami will NOT be permitted until a final report is received from the ESL program confirming English abilities adequate to undertake a full course of study. Copies of ESL program records and acceptable English test scores must accompany this report.
