Sport Studies
Degree: Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health
What is Sport Studies?
This major allows students who have a keen interest in sport to study it from critical and multidisciplinary perspectives (psychological, sociological, and historical). Many students combine this major with one of a variety of minors, depending on their specific interests (e.g., a minor in Business, Communications/Journalism, Coaching, Women's Studies, Gerontology) or another major (e.g., in Business, Health Studies). The Sport Studies major offers both theoretical and more applied coursework that prepares students to think critically about sport, culture, and the human body and for leadership roles in the sport and leisure fields.
What are the features of Miami's program?
Personal attention: You have opportunities to do one-on-one research with our internationally recognized faculty as well as independent projects and internships.
Multidisciplinary approach: The Sport Studies major provides students with critical and multidisciplinary perspectives on sport, thus preparing them for a variety of careers and graduate programs.
Job placement: The sport and leisure fields provide many increasingly diverse career opportunities, and Miami's job placement rate is strong, thanks in part to the well-rounded education and practical experience students receive in internships and field experiences, as well as the more applied minors.
Are there special admission requirements?
To enter this major, students must enroll in the Department of Kinesiology and Health (KNH) to take KNH courses as pre-majors. Once enrolled as a Sport Studies pre-major, students are eligible to apply to the major after completing at least 24 credit hours of coursework (including three courses of program requirements), completing a critical thinking essay, and achieving a g.p.a. of 2.5 or higher.
What courses would I take?
In addition to a number of core courses required of all KNH majors, Sport Studies majors take courses that focus on the psychology, sociology, history, economics, and globalization of sport, leisure, and physical activity. Consistent with the Miami Plan, required courses in Sport Studies ask students to think in critical and reflective ways about sport, leisure, and physical activity practices and behaviors.
What can I do with this major?
This major allows students to pursue a variety of careers, including those in youth sport, intercollegiate athletics, recreational sport, professional sport, and non-profit and for-profit sport and recreation agencies and organizations as administrators, marketers, coaches, and program directors.
The program also serves as an excellent foundation for students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in such areas as sport marketing, sport administration, cultural studies, sport psychology/sociology, recreation and leisure, and sport law.
