Psychology

Degree: Bachelor of Arts

What is Psychology?

Psychologists try to determine what humans and other organisms do and think and the reasons for their behavior. They learn about these things through interviews, tests, surveys, and controlled experiments; therefore, they must combine knowledge in theory, research methods, and applied skills.

What are the features of Miami's program?

Research opportunities: Each semester, between 75 and 100 psychology majors take independent study, working individually with faculty and other students on research projects. Some are student projects, others are for faculty research.

Breadth of program: Unlike some schools, Miami's program gives you a foundation in all the major areas: psychobiology, cognitive, developmental, individualized, and social psychology.

Undergraduate Fellows Program: This matches a senior and faculty mentor to provide you with an overview of college teaching or related professional fields in psychology.

Top-notch facilities: Among the special facilities that can aid your studies are computer-equipped laboratories, observation rooms with closed-circuit TV, animal facilities, motion simulation apparatus, and an ergonomic laboratory. Additionally, the psychology building is networked for multimedia presentations in most classrooms.

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

What courses would I take?

Psychology majors at Miami receive sound liberal arts training, which is a good preparation for many different careers or areas of graduate study. The core curriculum surveys the methods and findings of a variety of areas in psychology.

You may individualize your program by choosing courses which are especially recommended for your career goals. This flexibility provides excellent training for careers in mental health, school psychology, social work, parole/probation, business, industry, civil service, government, and personnel work.

Independent study is another way of gearing the psychology major to your own interests, and our faculty will guide you in your readings and research projects. For example, undergraduates have traced biochemical pathways, evaluated the ways people form impressions due to the physical attractiveness of others, and analyzed therapies for dealing with phobias.

This program provides excellent preparation for students planning to pursue graduate study in psychology. Outstanding students are encouraged to enroll in the departmental honors program.

What can I do with this major?

In a recent survey of psychology graduates who entered the job market upon graduation, more than 95 percent reported they are working in positions appropriate to their education and career goals. The fields in which they are employed include human services, marketing, finance, service delivery, education, management, and health.

Each year, about 40 percent of our psychology majors enroll in graduate or professional schools after earning their bachelor's degree. The most popular fields of study are psychology, counseling, personnel, business administration, medicine, nursing, law, education, neuroscience, and social work.

Miami administers a joint master's and doctoral (Ph.D.) degree program in psychology. Miami also offers master's and specialist in education (Ed.D.) degrees in school psychology and a master's in educational psychology through the School of Education, Health, and Society.
