Management Information Systems

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Business

What is Management Information Systems?

Information systems are a critical component of the operational, tactical, and strategic objectives of many organizations. Managers must know how to best use the information resources found in these systems. Management information Systems (MIS) gives you a balanced coverage of the managerial and technical issues critical to controlling the information resources of an organization.

What are the features of Miami's program?

Top national ranking: Miami's Farmer School of Business has been ranked as one of the top 50 undergraduate business programs in the country. It is fully accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the sole accrediting agency for programs in business administration and accounting. Only 22 percent of American business schools have all of their programs accredited by the AACSB.

Well-balanced education: Miami's MIS program helps you learn the strategic value of information, gives you a thorough knowledge of the business functions, and stresses the importance of verbal and written communications.

Technological experience: Emphasis is placed on structuring and solving business problems using end-user computer technology. Experience in end-user technology is an integral part of the MIS program.

Target school for recruitment: Miami has traditionally been a target school for Fortune 500 companies and the Big Four accounting firms. More than 92 percent of Miami business students secure employment within months of graduation, while five percent continue with graduate education. Our alumni prove the quality of their career preparation. More than 2,000 Miami business graduates are presidents, CEOs, or owners of companies.

Job placement: Miami's MIS job-placement rate is nearly 100 percent, and this program was recognized by Datamation magazine as a place for businesses to "recruit their next rising stars."

Are there special admission requirements?

Admission to the Farmer School of Business is limited, and the criteria for admission are subject to change as enrollment demands vary.

Entering freshmen who are admitted to and participate in the School of Business Honors Program are afforded regular business standing upon initial enrollment. All other entering freshmen are admitted to the School as "pre-business" majors and advance to regular business upon successful completion of all admission requirements. These requirements include 60 semester hours in courses such as Calculus, Introduction to Financial Accounting, and Business Statistics. A 3.0 g.p.a. in all business core courses and Miami Plan Foundation courses is also necessary.

What courses would I take?

All MIS students take a common core of courses, which includes analysis and design of information systems, management of information systems, strategic uses of information systems, design and development of databases, development of business information systems, web-based programming (JAVA).

The remaining elective courses are chosen from within the department according to personal career and academic interest.

What can I do with this major?

Graduates with a major in Management Information Systems may pursue careers in information systems analysis, data communications, network analysis, project management, microcomputing, consulting, and web page design. Graduates are qualified to pursue graduate study in a variety of fields, including business administration and MIS. Many recent MIS graduates have taken positions in information systems consulting.
