Latin American, Latino/a, and Caribbean Studies

Degree: Bachelor of Arts

What is Latin American, Latino/a, and Caribbean Studies?

Open to all undergraduates, Latin American, Latino/a, and Caribbean Studies (LAS) is an interdisciplinary program that introduces students to Latin America from mutually enriching perspectives in the humanities, fine arts, social and physical sciences. Courses examine and analyze Latin America's cultures, economies, social and political systems, literature, art, music, history, and geography across the hemisphere. Opportunities for study abroad and service learning with Latin American communities in Ohio promote the active application of international knowledge to issues vital to today's changing world.

What are the features of Miami's program?

Interdisciplinary: The interdisciplinary framework of the LAS program brings together insights and applications from various disciplines (including business, humanities, natural and social sciences), staff, students, and community members who have scholarly, professional and personal interests in Latin America.

Study abroad: The LAS program highly values study abroad in all Latin American contexts. Each year Miami offers numerous Summer and/or Spring break workshops in such locations as the Bahamas, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominica, Haiti, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Professional experience: Students may participate in Service Learning for credit working with Latin American communities in Southwestern Ohio.

Are there special admission requirements?

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

What courses would I take?

The interdisciplinary nature of LAS allows students to take courses in a variety of disciplines. Study abroad, independent study, and service learning credits may be combined with traditional coursework in completion of the LAS major. LAS majors are required to complete language courses in Spanish, Portuguese, or French.

What can I do with this major?

Graduate schools and employers consistently seek college graduates who can think critically and communicate effectively, and who understand today's society in a context where 15 percent of the U.S. population is Latino/Hispanic and a great deal of interaction occurs among U.S. and Latin American business, culture, music, resources, and other realms. A major in Latin American Studies prepares you for many different fields and careers as well as top graduate programs throughout the U.S. Recent graduates include Peace Corps volunteers and teachers in "Teach For America"; others have pursued careers in business, journalism, diplomacy, foreign affairs, teaching, and academia.
