Health Studies

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health

What is Health Studies?

In this program, "health" refers to optimal functioning, a process of achieving mental, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual potential. A student completing this major will be able to facilitate individual health behavior maintenance and/or change, and will also have an understanding of how individual, social, and environmental forces interact in shaping health practices. The intent of this program is to prepare students to be direct providers of health information, informed health advocates, and health educators in corporate, classroom, community, work site, and/or clinical settings.

What are the features of Miami's program?

Specialization: Because people's health practices, resources, and opportunities vary across the lifespan, students in the health studies program are required to choose a specialization from among the following three modules emphasizing a developmental phase in the lifespan: child and adolescent health; young and middle adult health; and older adult health.

Personal attention: You have opportunities to do one-on-one research with our internationally recognized faculty, as well as independent projects and internships.

Job placement: The health field has many opportunities, and Miami's job placement rate is strong, thanks in part to the well-rounded education and practical experience students receive in internships and field experiences.

Are there special admission requirements?

To enter this major, students must enroll in the Department of Kinesiology and Health (KNH) to take KNH courses as pre-majors. Once enrolled as a health studies pre-major, students are eligible to apply to the major after completing at least 24 credit hours of coursework (including three courses of program requirements) and achieving a g.p.a. of 2.5 or higher.

What courses would I take?

The health studies curriculum is cross-disciplinary in nature, focusing on the sociology, history, pedagogy, psychology, physiology, and biology of health. You're widely trained with an understanding of other related areas, such as psychology, sociology, and gerontology (study of the elderly).

What can I do with this major?

This major represents an emerging career alternative for students interested in exercise, health, and sport, who do not wish to pursue teacher licensure.
