Exercise Science

Businesses and social agencies hold increasing opportunities for people interested in health and wellness. Corporations sponsor employee fitness programs, and adult exercise centers offer a wide range of services. Sports medicine and sport management are emerging specialties, and community agencies are expanding their programs in physical rehabilitation and disease prevention.

Program Strengths

Personal attention: You have opportunities to do one-on-one research with our internationally recognized faculty, as well as independent projects and internships.

Interdisciplinary approach: You're widely trained with an understanding of other related areas, such as psychology, sociology, and gerontology (study of the elderly).

Your Programs of Study

The Exercise Science major leads to the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health. Exercise science prepares you for careers in the areas of physical fitness and health promotion, cardiac rehabilitation, and fitness assessment and exercise prescription. The exercise science major is also appropriate for students interested in entering professional programs in physical or occupational therapy, medicine, or chiropractic.

You should have a strong interest in chemistry, physics, physiology, and anatomy since these subjects are the foundation for the scientific analysis of exercise and sport performance. You should also enjoy doing laboratory work.

Miami offers two new exercise science labs: the exercise physiology lab includes treadmills, bicycle ergometers, carbon dioxide and oxygen analyzers, electrocardiographs, and blood analysis hardware. The motor behavior lab researches human movement with a stability platform, rotary pursuit, and reaction and movement timers.

After You Graduate

This major is offered through the Department of Kinesiology and Health, which is part of the School of Education, Health, and Society. This is not, however, a teacher certification program. Rather, it is an emerging career alternative for students interested in exercise, health, and sport, who do not wish to become school teachers.

The health field has many opportunities, and Miami's job placement rate is strong, thanks in part to the well-rounded education and practical experience students receive in internships and field experiences.
