Environmental Science (co-major)
Degree: No specific degree is designated for this co-major. Students select another major at Miami (receiving the degree designation of that major) and choose Environmental Science as a second major.
What is Environmental Science?
Environmental science emphasizes earth science and life science approaches to understanding environmental patterns and processes. If you are primarily interested in biological and physical science specializations, such as zoology or other life and earth sciences, this co-major complements your major especially well.
What are the features of Miami's program?
Co-major: The term "co-major" is unique and indicates that students must be concurrently enrolled in and must complete another major at Miami University. This co-major complements the primary major, which provides significant depth and breadth in an academic discipline.
Living Learning Community: First-year students are encouraged to live in a special residence hall with others interested in environmental studies and particpate in the residence hall's Environmental Awareness Program.
Are there special admission requirements?
You must be concurrently enrolled in and must complete another major at Miami University.
What courses would I take?
A required introductory environmental core course, usually taken in the sophomore year, is typically team-taught by a biological scientist and an earth scientist and emphasizes the mix of scientific approaches to understanding environmental issues. Internships, study abroad workshops, and other experiences beyond the classroom are encouraged and can count toward the degree requirements.
What can I do with this major?
Graduates of this program typically find jobs in scientific areas, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, research laboratories, park services, and resource management.
