Environmental Principles and Practice (co-major)

Degree: No specific degree is designated for this co-major. Students select another major at Miami (receiving the degree designation of that major) and choose Environmental Principles and Practice as a second major.

What is Environmental Principles and Practice?

This co-major emphasizes human-nature interaction in understanding environmental patterns and processes. Students are prepared to pursue a wide variety of career paths and post-graduate degrees in environmental science, especially those with management and policy specializations. If you are primarily interested in management and policy specializations, such as business, political science, anthropology, or other social sciences, this co-major complements your major especially well.

What are the features of Miami's program?

Co-major: The term "co-major" is unique and indicates that students must be concurrently enrolled in and must complete another major at Miami University. This co-major complements the primary major, which provides significant depth and breadth in an academic discipline.

Living Learning Community: First-year students are encouraged to live in a special residence hall with others interested in environmental studies and particpate in the residence hall's Environmental Awareness Program.

Are there special admission requirements?

You must be concurrently enrolled in and must complete another major at Miami University.

What courses would I take?

Usually taken in the sophomore and senior years, required environmental core courses are typically team-taught by an environmental scientist and a social scientist, emphasizing the study of the environment as a mix of natural and social sciences. Experience beyond the classroom, such as an internship or study abroad, is also required and counts toward degree requirements.

What can I do with this major?

Graduates of this program typically find jobs in environmental policy areas, such as state and local government, environmental consulting, and private corporations concerned with environmental issues.
