East Asian Languages and Cultures

Degree: Bachelor of Arts

What is East Asian Languages and Cultures?

The East Asian Languages and Cultures program provides intensive studies in the languages and cultures of East Asia, focusing on Japan and China. Since these two countries are important trading partners with the United States, this major provides comprehensive training for such job markets. The major also provides a strong academic background for students who wish to pursue further academic degrees in Asian Studies or related fields.

What are the features of Miami's program

Study abroad: The Japanese program has a long history of exchange with our partner university, Kansai-gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. We also send students to universities in the central Japan and Tokyo areas through the exchange consortium to which Miami belongs. Additionally, the Chinese program is currently involved in Miami's effort to build a learning center in Shanghai.

Personalized curriculum: The program provides intensive study in the languages and cultures of East Asia, focusing on Japan and China. Students who major in EALC choose a concentration from among the following three options: Japan, China or a combination of both Japan and China. It is advantageous for those studying in one area to possess some knowledge about the other; thus, a student could choose the Japan concentration and minor in Chinese or choose the China concentration and minor in Japanese.

Overseas internships: The Japanese government-sponsored English teaching/cultural exchange internship program (JET) is one of the most popular postgraduate career opportunities. Each year, typically 3-8 Miami students are sent to Japan through this program. Overseas internship programs like JET strengthen linguistic ability and cultural knowledge, rendering students highly marketable for specialized jobs in international corporations, U.S./Asia joint businesses, government jobs, and non-profit organizations like the U.S./Japan friendship societies.

Are there special admission requirements?

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

What courses would I take?

Along with Miami Plan Foundation courses, you would take language classes in either Japanese or Chinese, depending on your concentration. Other courses like Geography of East Asia, Politics of China and Japan, International Relations of East Asia and Buddhism in China, Korea, and Japan are also offered.

What can I do with this major?

Although the EALC major is new for 2006-2007, graduates with Japanese and Chinese minors have taken jobs in computer software companies, airline companies, the military, educational institutions, and publishing companies.
