Athletic Training

The mission of the Athletic Training Education Program at Miami University is to prepare educated professional Athletic Trainers by providing opportunities through the academic curriculum as well as clinical experiences with Miami’s Intercollegiate Athletics and off-campus internships, in which students develop competency and proficiency of entry level skills and for successful completion of the Board of Certification Examination and employment placement in the Athletic Training Profession.

Students who have an interest in sports, an allied medical health career, and in helping people, pursue this major. This major, with a few additional elective courses, may also prepare students to go on to a variety of professional schools including: physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, medical, or chiropractic.

Program Strengths

Personal attention: You have opportunities to do one-on-one research with our internationally recognized faculty, as well as independent projects and internships.

Interdisciplinary approach: You're widely trained with an understanding of other related areas, such as psychology, sociology, and gerontology (study of the elderly).

Your Programs of Study

The athletic training major at Miami University leads to the Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students who successfully complete this Athletic Training Education Program will be qualified and eligible to take the Board of Certification examination.

Students will develop skills in assessment, rehabilitation, reconditioning, prevention, immediate care, and administration. Areas of study include anatomy, biomechanics, and therapeutic exercise and modalities. In addition to the formal course requirements, a clinical experience under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer is required to successfully fulfill the program requirements and to attain a competency and proficiency of the required skills. These clinical experiences will be attained through scheduled clinical field experiences which shall include on-campus Athletic Training Facility morning and afternoon hours, sport practices and competitions with Miami University Intercollegiate Athletics, local high schools, and clinics.

After You Graduate

This major is offered through the Department of Kinesiology and Health, which is part of the School of Education, Health, and Society.

Athletic Training prepares students for a career as a certified athletic trainer in a variety of settings. Upon successful completion of the Board of Certification examination, students may begin careers in universities, professional sports, high schools, sports medicine clinics, and industry.

The health field has many opportunities, and Miami's job placement rate is strong, thanks in part to the well-rounded education and practical experience students receive in internships and field experiences.
