Job Searching of a Different Kind
Each Wednesday for 10 weeks, Erin Moody spent her day at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank in Columbus as a participant of Miami's Urban Leadership Internship program. Dozens of volunteers joined her in preparing packages to be distributed to less-fortunate Ohioans in a 20-county area of the state.
"It makes me want to look for a job that actually helps people," Moody said. She decided to visit Miami's service learning office and continue her volunteer efforts during the school year.
Moody also interned at the Economic Development Division of Columbus; its purpose is to create jobs in the city by expanding or opening new businesses. The department offers tax incentives for businesses, then monitors whether they've created jobs. Moody met with the businesses to present the options available.
In the early weeks of her internship, Moody led a meeting to discuss a website she designed for the office. "I actually used the stuff I learned in Miami classes," she said, reflecting on her computer skills.
Moody appreciated the professional skills she gained during the internship, including working in groups, meeting with businesses, and writing legislation for city council. "They wanted to make sure I actually got real world experience," she said. |
