On Her Way to the Top
In an office several floors up in the Sears Tower, senior Diana Williams applied accounting knowledge from Miami's business school in her internship at one of the nation's top public accounting firms. After enduring a selective hiring process, the accounting and marketing major spent her summer working at Ernst & Young's Chicago office.
Much of her work involved client engagements in and outside the city, where she and a group of E&Y employees analyzed accounting records.
The experience enabled Williams to consider potential job paths by interacting with professionals at different stages in their careers. She also worked with several Miami graduates. "Miami has a very prestigious business school and the accountancy program is highly regarded by the big four public firms," she said.
Williams enjoyed summer in the city and took advantage of its festivals and activities. An internship is the best way to experience it, she says, because co-workers know the city so well.
"I've found that interning is an irreplaceable experience because although I have learned the fundamentals of accounting in classes, these lessons are only the base knowledge necessary for work in the business world."
