d. Wellesley. Only five of some 45
schools founded by early Mount Holyoke alumnae have their seals in the
stained-glass windows of Mount Holyoke's Williston Library and are known as
"daughters." Although Wellesley had close ties with Western -- both
Leila McKee and Susan Peabody obtained degrees from Wellesley after graduating
from the Seminary, several of the first faculty were from the Seminary, and a
member of the Seminary faculty, Miss Ada Howard, became Wellesley's first
president when Helen Peabody declined the job -- it is not one of them.

Dr. Nelson graduated from Western in 1920; received her master’s from Smith in
1923, her doctorate from Berkeley in 1933; and was awarded an honorary Doctor of
Literature degree from Western in 1968. Oh, and by the way, she was made an
Honorary Life Trustee of the college in 1968 -- but we couldn't quite count
that as another degree.
