Kumler Chapel
was the setting this fall for a series of lectures on
Freedom Summer '64/Civil Rights and Social Justice.
Sponsored by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies (Western
College Program), it featured Chude Allen, a poet and Freedom
Summer volunteer; and MU professors Rick Momeyer (philosophy),
Rodney Coates (sociology), John Cinnamon (anthropology), and
Tammy Kernodle (music). The weekend before classes started,
all Western students read and discussed Letters from
Mississippi (personal reports from civil rights
volunteers, edited by Elizabeth Martinez, published in 2002),
viewed a special civil rights exhibit at the Miami University
Art Museum, and wrote essays on freedom. The academic
year will be rounded out -- for Western alums -- with Reunion
2006 (June 16-18). Returning alums will be asked to read
Letters from Mississippi in preparation for a book
discussion, just one of the weekend's activities.
