WITH THE WCAA

WCAA Board President, Renee Harris Yates '72 and new Miami President, David Hodge at WCAA Fall Board Meeting.
One of the highlights of the fall Board of Trustees meeting was the opportunity to welcome Miami's new president, David Hodge, and his wife, Valerie. The day before joining trustees for lunch at the Lodge, the Hodges toured Peabody Hall with Dean Gracie and were introduced to the Western College Archives by director Jacky Johnson. In his remarks to the board, President Hodge confided that the experience had been very moving and led him to understand how important living and studying on the Western campus must have been to those who attended. The board presented him with a copy of Narka Nelson's history of the college and Dean Hoyt's memoir, Where the Peonies Bloomed.

On Saturday, Miami's vice president for academic affairs, Jeffrey Herbst, spoke at our annual luncheon for WCAA international scholarship recipients. Dr. Herbst has a special interest in international education and acknowledged that Western College was ahead of its time in 1953, when it embarked on its innovative international focus under the direction of Western President Herrick Young. He stated further that the alumnae association is continuing that legacy with generous support of scholarships to bring international students to campus as well as send U.S. students abroad.
