When WCP junior Greg
Cook was ready to demonstrate his 3D self-replicating
machine this fall, benefactors Betty
Sipe Gerber '52
and husband Don were on hand to applaud his project. Greg
was the winner of the 2008 Catharine A. Gerber Award
(named for Gerbers' daughter), an annual award of $1,000
to a Western College Program student for best proposal for
use of technology (defined broadly to include computer and
digital equipment as well as visual media, sound recording
and broadcast production) in aid of a course assignment,
field experience or project. |

Some traditions never die. As a member of the WCP
Traditions & Transitions of Western College class,
Tyler Stallings '10 researched "Winter Weekend." The result was
current Westerners caroling through the corridors of Peabody, making handmade ornaments out of recycled goods for the
Western tree, and enjoying snacks and beverages while
listening to a popular MU a cappella group. They also made
a video
of this event!

Project
Dragonfly -- which began with Dragonfly
magazine in the Western College Program in 1994 --
received the Outstanding Service to Environmental
Education by an Organization at the Global Level Award
from the North American Association for Environmental
Education (NAAEE) on October 18. Dragonfly is directed by
MU professors and WCP class of '83 alums Chris
Myers and Lynne
Born Myers.
One
of Dragonfly’s many programs is Earth Expeditions, a global
conservation program in partnership with the Cincinnati
Zoo & Botanical Garden, which offers tuition-free,
graduate-credit courses for formal and informal educators.
Applications are due January 28 for Field Expeditions
opportunities in pivotal conservation hotspots in Belize,
Costa Rica, Trinidad,
Mongolia,
Thailand,
Kenya
and Namibia. New this year is the Global Field Program, a
Miami
U.
master's degree offered entirely through Field Expeditions
experiences worldwide with coursework on web-based
learning communities.
