Alumnae Hall Memorial -- bulb planting November 10, 2001

Early on the misty morning of November 10, the bulb-planting crew assembled. Miami groundskeepers had prepared trenches ready to receive the 7,000 tiny grape hyacinth bulbs. Next spring, the blooms will outline the footprint of Alumnae Hall. With the Boyd Hall greenhouses as backdrop, WCP dean Burt Kaufman carefully rakes dirt over the bulbs he’s just planted.

Leading the charge in typical fashion, Betty Sipe Gerber ’52 has a special stake in the success of the planting: Her class will be celebrating its 50th anniversary when the flowers are in bloom at Reunion 2002. Behind Betty is Pris Strand Berry ’54; both are Oxford residents. Behind Pris is Charles Nies, WCP Director of Student Life. Pris Strand Berry ’54 is closely supervised by a member of the MU groundskeeper staff. Kumler Chapel can be seen behind them.

Two enthuisiastic Western Program students work on a section just across from McKee Hall. Senior Megan Gallagher (wielding the rake) is the daughter of Annette Bevan Gallagher ’69 and granddaughter of Beth Shirk Bevan ’45.
