Make a gift

Carine M. FeytenMessage from the dean:

Greetings,

Congratulations to the new graduates who received degrees from the School of Education, Health and Society (EHS) at Miami's May 8 commencement!

Even though I know the cycle will repeat, it's still a bittersweet time. I'm proud to report that EHS is expecting a record first-year class this fall, up 100 students from last year's total. I thank each of you who are spreading the word about the quality and innovation taking place at Miami.

I'd also like to share the good news that EHS has received a $1 million commitment from a 1959 graduate. The gift, one of the largest in EHS's history, will go toward scholarships for education majors. The donor has not yet indicated how she wants to proceed with an official announcement, so I cannot provide specific details other than to say how grateful we are for her generosity and concern for future Miamians.

This gift caps an extraordinary academic year. For example, education students now have the new option to pair a specialty in urban education with their major. I hope you'll check out our cool new video about the innovative Urban Teaching Cohort.

Fondly,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor of Foreign Language Education

Martha CastañedaMiami student government named Martha Castañeda Outstanding Professor for 2010. It's the second time in four years a faculty member from the School of Education, Health and Society has received professor-of-the-year honors. In 2007 the alumni association named Tom Romano Effective Educator.

Texting while driving is a potentially lethal combination, yet most young drivers admit to doing it regularly. A student-led drive to get peers to sign a pledge to stop texting while behind the wheel attracted television cameras to Miami's campus this spring.

The Department of Educational Psychology (EDP) is offering a new one-year program in assessment and evaluation that can be completed part time. It provides a focused way to improve skills along with recognition of professional development.

EHS graduates continue to win honors including Sharon Hall, Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; Chris Maraschiello, Ohio Middle School Teacher of the Year; and Carie Tragesser, Hamilton Educator of the Year. Marlene Warren would like to start an alumni group in Bermuda.
