Message from the dean:
Greetings,
Miami is indeed fortunate that our alumni feel such a deep sense of loyalty to their alma mater.
The latest example is Faye Smith '59, who this summer made a $1 million bequest to the School of Education, Health and Society for need-based scholarships. Miami made an enduring difference in her life, and she wants to help future students have a similar college experience.
Few alumni can make such a major contribution, but the fact that so many of you are supportive in your own ways makes me feel quite fortunate.
Whether it be recommending that a neighbor's teenager apply to Miami or keeping in touch with a favorite faculty member, EHS alums stay connected. I was particularly touched that despite challenging economic times, a record 409 of you, including 212 new donors, contributed to the 2009 Dean's Fund drive.
Your interest and support make such a difference.
Fondly,
Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor of Foreign Language Education

A $1 million bequest from Faye Smith '59 for need-based scholarships will help generations of future Miamians who are pursuing a career in education. "I wouldn't be where I am today without the education I received at Miami," says Smith, herself a first-generation college student

EHS has so many Miami "professors of the year" that this newsletter lost track of one in a story in the spring issue on the newest honoree Martha Castaneda (teacher education). We deeply regret not including Karen Montgomery, also a faculty member in the teacher education department, as a winner of ASG's 2007 Outstanding Professor Award.
