Message from the dean:

Greetings,

Rethinking what we do and how we do it is a central theme for the 2007-08 academic year at the School of Education and Allied Professions (EAP), and it's exciting to see the new opportunities being created for students. Here's a sampling of our goals:

- Build on existing strengths in providing international and real-world experiences for students.
- Implement innovative technology initiatives to prepare our graduates for tomorrow's world.
- Pilot a comprehensive urban initiative that will address educational achievement gaps.

Despite these ambitious changes, certain core values remain constant. I recently learned about a senior who ran out of money last spring. He wasn't able to pay for his teaching licensure test fees or even buy food. Seems a faculty member stepped in and provided money out of his own pocket so that this senior could make it to graduation.

That kind of caring represents what we're all about.

Warm regards,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor of Foreign Language Education

Coming back from personal tragedy is never easy, but 1963 Miami education graduate B.J. (Gerdes) Reed is sharing her story with a national audience in order to inspire others to become fit.

B.J. Reed '63 made fitness a way of life following a tragic accident, and her story has inspired thousands of Americans. But what about the average person? We know we should be exercising more and eating better, so why don't we? We asked Jay Kimiecik, associate professor in the department of kinesiology and health (formerly physical education, health and sport studies) and director of Miami's Employee Health & Well-Being program.

The School of Education and Allied Professions (EAP) has been awarded a five-year $1.5 million grant aimed at helping Ohio's schools address the challenges of teaching students who are learning English as a second language.

Doris Bergen, professor of educational psychology, is one of only a dozen Miami faculty members to be awarded the title of Distinguished Professor by Miami's board of trustees since the program began in 1981.

As the teaching of math concepts moves from higher grades to lower grades, teachers as well as students must adapt. A $339,585 grant from the Ohio Department of Education is allowing Miami to partner with four local school districts to provide professional development for K-9 teachers.

Kouider Mokhtari's appointment as Heckert Chair of Reading and Writing continues the Miami tradition of leadership in literacy, a tradition that goes back to the 1800s and the legacy of Professor William Holmes McGuffey and his famous McGuffey Readers. Today's challenges may be different than when McGuffey wrote textbooks that were relevant to the lives of frontier youngsters, but they demand the same kind of innovative thinking.

In academia, it's highly unusual to have a publisher approach a newly minted PhD student and seek to publish their dissertation as a book. But that's exactly what happened to Lori Tanner, whose research looked at Miami's innovative online licensure program for special education teachers.

We are a collegial community of learners, specifically focused on the development of leaders for education, families, health and social service agencies, and local communities. We are stewards of our public responsibility to create knowledge and strategies to improve our complex global society. We strive to be exemplars of practices that are democratic, nurturing, and responsive to diverse learners and contexts.
